Philippine island of Pamaravan fights floods with bamboo and shells instead of concrete

On the island of Pamaravan in Manila Bay, the country's first nature-based flood protection project has been completed: bamboo structures and an oyster-shell breakwater cost less than a concrete dam. The project was carried out against the backdrop of a scandal involving shoddy concrete structures, but its long-term effectiveness has yet to be assessed.

Scientists demand climate change be declared a global health emergency

Nearly 150 researchers from more than 30 countries have called on the WHO and the UN to officially recognize climate change as a global health emergency. The basis is the annual Lancet Countdown report: mortality from heat, drought and food insecurity is rising faster than before the Paris Agreement. Summer 2026 became Europe's deadliest: more than 50 thousand excess deaths from heat

A study by Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine estimates the number of excess heat-related deaths in summer 2026 across 854 cities in 30 European countries at approximately 50,391 — a record over 26 years of observations. About two-thirds of the cases are attributed by the authors to anthropogenic climate change. The highest death tolls were in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom.

UN: Warming almost inevitably exceeds 1.5 °C, but there is a shift in the fight against climate change

According to UN data cited by Tagesschau, exceeding the Paris-agreed warming limit of 1.5 °C is practically inevitable, said Secretary-General António Guterres. According to a UNEP report, to keep warming within 1.7–1.8 °C by mid-century, emissions must fall by more than 6% annually until 2035, yet they are rising. If current policies continue, warming could reach 2.8 °C by the end of the century.

UAE Ministry of Health Unveils Plan to Adapt Healthcare to Climate Change

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has identified six climate-related priority areas: heat-related illnesses, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, insect-borne diseases, water- and foodborne infections, and the impact of climate on mental health. The plan was developed jointly with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and provides for early warning systems, training of medical staff, and increased resilience of healthcare facilities.

EIB to double climate adaptation financing to €30 billion by 2030

The European Investment Bank announced plans to increase financing for climate adaptation measures to at least €30 billion by 2030. The decision comes against the backdrop of an estimated €43 billion in EU losses from the extreme weather events of summer 2025 and a forecast of cumulative damage of up to €126 billion by 2029.

IUCN: 96% of the world's coral reefs at risk of collapse by 2075

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has for the first time systematically assessed 127 tropical and subtropical coral reef ecosystems and classified 96% of them as 'on the verge of complete collapse'. The main threat identified is climate-related thermal stress; without factoring in future climate projections, only 24% of reefs would have held critical status.

Shark Named Bukhang-i Left Busan Canal After Rescuers' Third Attempt

The three-metre dusky shark, which had spent a month in an artificial canal in Busan and attracted more than 1.6 million viewers, was guided out of the waterway on Wednesday using a net on pontoons. Authorities feared for its life due to falling water temperatures and signs of deteriorating health. Environmentalists link its appearance to climate change.

Storm 'Adam' kills five people in eastern Spain: the DANA weather system is to blame

Storm 'Adam', caused by the DANA phenomenon, dumped up to 700 litres of rain per square metre on the Valencia region within 24 hours. Five people died, and some residents were evacuated by air. Unlike the 2024 disaster that claimed 200 lives, mobile phone warnings were sent out in advance this time. Scientists link the intensification of such downpours to climate change.

Nearly Half of the World's Reef-Building Corals Are Threatened with Extinction — Study in Nature

A new study published in the journal Nature has found that about 44% of reef-building coral species are at elevated risk of extinction. The main cause cited is climate-related thermal stress. Scientists warned that the assessment does not take into account the record ocean warming of 2023–2025, so the share of endangered species may be even higher.

Extreme weather hits Europe's harvests: farmers see the way out in diversification and regenerative agriculture

A hot and dry summer, which ECIU says would have been practically impossible without climate change, cut Europe's grain harvest forecast by roughly 16.7 million tonnes and cost farmers more than €3 billion. Farmers in Spain, Germany and Sweden describe how crop diversification and soil restoration help them survive droughts and frosts, and call on authorities to change the support system. Villages in Ayutthaya Province Flooded for the Sixth Year in a Row: The Price of Protecting Bangkok from Floods

After the 2011 floods, Thailand expanded dikes and spillways to protect Bangkok, Ayutthaya and industrial zones along the Chao Phraya. Commercial centers are protected, but low-lying villages that serve as floodwater release zones are flooded every year. Residents raise their houses on stilts at their own expense for 100,000 to a million baht, an environmentalist proposed a 'flood-free living tax,' and authorities are building a €700 million bypass canal by 2030.

Climate change threatens brain health of Europeans — neurologists warn of rising strokes and dementia

Neurologist Ulf Kallweit told Euronews at the European Health Forum in Gastein that heat raises stroke risk, disrupts sleep and expands the range of infections affecting the nervous system. Neurological disorders affect roughly one in three people, and their economic burden in 2019 was estimated at €1.5 trillion. Risks are higher for vulnerable groups and residents of disadvantaged areas.

Slovenia takes measures to save its last glacier, Skuta

The Skuta glacier is Slovenia's only remaining glacier after the near-complete disappearance of the glacier on Triglav. Over 80 years of observations, its area has shrunk from 2.5–3 to 1.5 hectares, and the ice thickness from tens of metres to just a few. Scientists link the melting to snow-poor winters and hot summers, and the consequences to the shallowing of the Drava and Mura rivers and the reduction of groundwater.
