The key facts

  • Yellow danger level due to black ice: in Moscow until the morning of November 6, in Moscow Region until the morning of November 7
  • Meteo center forecaster Alexander Ilyin warned of precipitation and black ice
  • Tatyana Pozdnyakova spoke of wet snow with precipitation of no more than 2 mm

Black ice warning

A yellow level of weather danger has been declared in Moscow and Moscow Region due to black ice. As RIA Novosti was told by forecasters from Russia's Hydrometeorological Center, the warning in Moscow is in effect from 9:00 pm on November 5 until 9:00 am on November 6, while in Moscow Region it lasts longer: from 9:00 pm on November 5 until 9:00 am on November 7. Thus, the warning period for the region is roughly a day longer than for the capital.

What forecasters said earlier

Shortly before the danger level was declared Alexander Ilyin, a forecaster at the Meteo forecasting center said that fairly cool weather with precipitation and black ice was expected in the capital region. Forecaster Tatyana Pozdnyakova, in turn, in a conversation with Gazeta.Ru noted that mostly wet snow would fall in Moscow this week, with total precipitation not exceeding 2 mm, and that the air temperature would be such that the snow would melt — these are exactly the conditions that create the risk of black ice warned about by the Hydrometeorological Center.

Context

In practical terms, the warning means an increased risk of slippery roads and sidewalks in the evening and morning hours: the yellow level is the first of the weather danger levels and is informational in nature. Earlier, the meteorologist also spoke about what the coming winter would be like; the details of that forecast are not given in the publication.
