A rare pregnancy ended with the birth of healthy twins

In Stavropol, a woman with a rare anatomical feature — a completely doubled uterus and two cervixes — gave birth to two healthy girls, each of whom developed in a separate organ. This was reported by the Health Ministry of Stavropol Krai.

How the pregnancy and the surgery went

The patient was monitored by specialists at the Stavropol Regional Clinical Perinatal Center; the uterine duplication was detected early in the pregnancy. This feature made carrying the pregnancy significantly more difficult: from the 22nd week the expectant mother was hospitalized due to the risk of preterm labor, and later additional treatment was needed for other complications. At the 34th week she developed moderate preeclampsia — a complication involving elevated blood pressure — and the doctors decided to perform a cesarean section. The surgeons made two separate incisions, one in each uterus, and to reduce the risk of blood loss they used an autotransfusion device that returns the patient's own blood. According to the regional Health Ministry, the mother and the newborns have already been discharged from the hospital.

Context: where twins are born more often in Russia

Life.ru previously cited data from the Social Fund on the frequency of multiple births: in the first nine months of 2026, Moscow and the Moscow region led with 1,075 cases of twin births and 13 cases of triplets in the capital region; Krasnodar Krai and St. Petersburg followed in the number of twin births. The Stavropol case is notable precisely for the rarity of the anatomy: with a doubled uterus, carrying twins with each child developing in a separate organ is an exceptional situation, and an outcome with the birth of two healthy children and the discharge of the whole family is considered a success.
