The key facts
- Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf said Americans rejected war, and Tehran supports this message

- Qatar continues mediation; Iran links the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to the end of the US naval blockade
Statement after the US elections
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Wednesday that American voters had rejected war, and that Tehran supports this message. “Whether out of conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we support this message,” the Anadolu Agency quoted him as saying in a statement published on the social network X. He also warned that if the US government betrays the will of its people for the sake of “international paymasters and blackmailers,” a “nightmare” awaits it.
Context of the elections and negotiations
The statement came after Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which the Democrats, according to projections, won control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. This is a defeat for President Donald Trump — who, according to the outlet, launched a war against Iran together with Israel in February of this year — and his Republican Party. Amid tensions over the US naval blockade and the security of the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar continues to mediate between Washington and Tehran. As the Iranian state reported on Monday, the exchange of messages with the US through intermediaries continues, and the opening of the strait depends on Washington ending the blockade.
