The key facts

  • Two girls from the village of Tolmachyovo went missing in 1999 at the ages of 16 and 18; their fate has not been established in 27 years
  • Bastrykin demanded a report after a television report in which relatives doubted that all criminal versions had been checked
  • The head of the Investigative Committee directorate for Novosibirsk Region, Sergey Mikhaylov, has been instructed to submit a report to the central apparatus

A 27-year-old case has returned to the central apparatus of the Investigative Committee

Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia Alexander Bastrykin has demanded a report on the investigation into the disappearance of two girls in Novosibirsk Region who went missing back in 1999. This was announced by the press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia, citing a publication by Life.ru. The case concerns two residents of the village of Tolmachyovo, who were 16 and 18 years old at the time of their disappearance; in the 27 years that have passed, it has not been possible to establish what happened to them.

The trigger was a television report

The central apparatus of the agency was drawn to attention by a legal affairs program that covered the circumstances of the long-ago disappearance. Relatives of the missing believe that law enforcement may not have checked all criminal versions of what happened; no confirmed information about the girls' fate is provided in the Investigative Committee's statement. Investigative bodies of the Investigative Committee of Russia for Novosibirsk Region are investigating a criminal case over the disappearance. The head of the regional directorate, Sergey Mikhaylov, has been instructed to submit a report to the central apparatus on the established circumstances, as well as on the arguments raised in the program.

A similar practice applies to other cases as well

As Life.ru previously reported, Bastrykin has also demanded a report on the criminal case into the disappearance of a resident of Tyumen Region: before he went missing, the man had a conflict with another person who was suspected of possible involvement. A murder case has been opened over the incident, and it has been decided to send the investigation materials to the central apparatus of the Investigative Committee. Thus, the chairman of the Investigative Committee demanding reports on high-profile missing persons cases is a practice used by the agency, and the Novosibirsk case has received the same oversight mechanism at the level of the central apparatus.
