The key facts
- Cauterizing ulcers with alcohol or brilliant green intensifies pain and can cause a burn to the mucosa
- The eruptions may turn out to be aphthous stomatitis; the exact cause of the disease is unknown
- A diagnosis cannot be made on one's own — many diseases of the mucosa look similar
Why self-treating mouth ulcers is dangerous
Painful ulcers in the mouth should not be cauterized with alcohol or brilliant green or constantly irritated: such self-treatment can intensify the pain, worsen the condition of the mucosa and lead to a burn. Life.ru was told about this by Natalya Akhremochkina, a general dentist at the Atribut clinic. According to her, aggressive methods will 'not simply fail to help' but will cause a deterioration of the condition and additional trauma to the mucosa.
Possible cause and what to do
The doctor noted that such eruptions may turn out to be a manifestation of aphthous stomatitis: the first sign is pain, and on examination separate ulcers with a white coating on reddened mucosa are visible. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but one of the likely mechanisms is considered to be a malfunction of the immune system, which is promoted by chronic infections, stress, overwork and microtraumas. The first step to recovery is eliminating provoking factors: treating foci of chronic infection, gum diseases and hard tissues of the teeth, professional hygiene and proper home care. Treatment may include local anesthetics, weak aqueous antiseptic solutions and healing preparations, and, if necessary, antihistamines and vitamin therapy.
Why a doctor's examination is needed
Akhremochkina urged not to diagnose oneself: many diseases of the mucosa look similar, so without an examination one can choose the wrong treatment and miss another pathology. During the illness, she advises avoiding hard toothbrushes, overly vigorous brushing and toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), not to injure the painful area, but not to give up daily hygiene — plaque bacteria weaken local defenses. It is better to use a soft brush, a single-tuft brush if necessary, and carefully clean the teeth next to the affected area. If ulcers appear, one should see a dentist at the first opportunity.
