The key facts

  • In October 2026, 4,041 earthquakes with a magnitude above 2.5 were recorded — twice as many as in October 2025
  • About 20 earthquakes had a magnitude above 6.0 — almost twice the usual monthly figure
  • Aftershocks are cited as a possible cause; Kamchatka lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire zone

October set a record for the number of tremors

In October 2026, 4,041 earthquakes with a magnitude above 2.5 were recorded worldwide — twice as many as in the same month last year. This was reported by Life.ru citing SHOT. According to the channel, October exceeded the figures of any other month of 2026 by at least 1,300 tremors. About 20 earthquakes had a magnitude above 6.0, which, according to SHOT, is almost twice the usual monthly figure.

A possible cause — aftershocks

One of the possible reasons for the large number of events, the channel says, is aftershocks — repeated tremors following strong earthquakes. For example, in Vanuatu such a series began after an earthquake with a magnitude of about 7.0 in late October. Expert in information and environmental security Ilya Rybalchenko, commenting for SHOT, explained that a strong earthquake redistributes stress in rocks and can trigger new tremors. According to him, Japan, the Philippines, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Kamchatka are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire zone, which accounts for about 81% of the planet's largest earthquakes.

Kamchatka: 27 noticeable earthquakes in a week

For Kamchatka, the elevated seismic activity in October is also confirmed by official data: in the week from October 5 to October 11, the regional Emergency Ministry office registered 27 of the most noticeable earthquakesoff the coast of the peninsula. These figures are consistent with the overall picture of the month described by SHOT: Kamchatka lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, where most strong tremors are concentrated. It should be noted, however, that the statistics on 4,041 earthquakes come from a single source — the SHOT Telegram channel — and there is no independent confirmation of these figures in publications.
