The key facts

  • A headache during computer work can arise from prolonged close-range focusing and be worsened by improperly fitted glasses
  • According to the doctor, there is not yet enough convincing evidence of the effectiveness of blue light filter glasses
  • Pulsating pain with nausea or light sensitivity may indicate a cause unrelated to vision

What causes headaches at the monitor

During prolonged work at a computer, a headache can arise from sustained strain on the eye's focusing system: after many hours of working at close range, some people find it difficult to quickly shift focus to distant objects. Usually this condition passes after rest, but regular pain or worsening vision, according to the doctor, require examination by a specialist. Sino Goziev told Gazeta.Ru about this— an ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon at JSC Medicine (the Roitberg Academic Clinic).

The role of glasses and working conditions

A second possible factor is improperly fitted glasses. According to Goziev, correction that is too strong or too weak, errors in the distance between lens centers, and insufficient correction of astigmatism increase visual strain, especially during many hours of computer work. Conditions also play a role: an overly bright screen, glare, small font, and an uncomfortable distance to the monitor force the eyes to strain and make one squint more often. At the same time, the doctor clarified that there is not yet enough convincing evidence that glasses with a blue light filter significantly reduce eye fatigue or headaches — this contradicts their popularity as a means of protection against fatigue when working with screens.

How to reduce strain and when to see a doctor

To reduce strain on the eyes, the ophthalmologist advises taking regular breaks, looking into the distance, blinking more often, and watching the lighting: screen brightness should match the light in the room, and the text should be large enough for comfortable reading. At the same time, he emphasized that not every headache is related to vision: if the pain is pulsating, accompanied by nausea or light sensitivity, or occurs regardless of screen work, the cause may be different. With recurring, unusual, or worsening headaches, it is necessary to see a doctor.
