The key facts
- Deepgram acquires Daily — the company behind the open-source Pipecat framework for voice AI
- The deal amount was not disclosed; Pipecat will remain open and vendor-neutral
- Deepgram also introduced the open Real-Time Context Standard (RCS) protocol, developed jointly with the Pipecat team
The deal and its terms
Voice AI startup Deepgram has announced the acquisition of Daily, the company that develops and maintains Pipecat, one of the most popular open-source frameworks for voice AI. The deal amount was not disclosed, but the parties stated that Pipecat will remain open source. TechCrunch reports on this.
What Pipecat is and why Deepgram wants it
Pipecat manages voice and video streams and connects pipeline elements — speech recognition (STT), large language models, and speech synthesis (TTS) — reducing latency. Daily itself provides hosted infrastructure for voice and video calls. For Deepgram, the deal means a deeper dive into real-time infrastructure, as well as an expansion beyond voice: the framework was originally conceived as a foundation for
Context: two graduates of the same YC batch
Daily, according to PitchBook, raised more than $62 million from investors including Tiger Global, Highfield Capital, Nat Friedman, Lachy Groom, and Kevin Weil. Deepgram achieved unicorn status earlier this year after a $130 million Series C round. Notably, both companies went through the same Y Combinator batch in 2016. Alongside the deal, Deepgram is launching the open Real-Time Context Standard (RCS) protocol, developed jointly with the Pipecat team: it describes metadata — for example, context from audio such as whispers, instructions for the language model on how to use these signals, and guidance on how the response should sound.
The voice AI market is consolidating
The deal comes amid active investment in the sector, both in models and in infrastructure. Among model developers, TechCrunch names ElevenLabs, Gradium and Fish Audio, which have raised large rounds; on the infrastructure side, LiveKit and Vapi conducted significant rounds this year. The acquisition of Daily is an attempt by top players to secure their positions through partnerships and acquisitions as new business models emerge.
