The key facts

  • Humming, grinding and vibration may indicate worn bearings, shock absorber problems or a foreign object in the drum.
  • Wet laundry after washing and puddles under the machine are signs of a clog or leak.
  • A smell of burnt rubber or wiring is the most alarming signal — use should be stopped immediately.

Five signs of an imminent breakdown

Before a serious breakdown, a washing machine may start rattling, vibrating strongly, leaving laundry too wet, leaking or emitting a smell of burnt rubber. Plumber Dmitry Nikonorov, registered on the Profi.ru service, told Life.ru about this. According to him, unusual noise or slight shaking can easily be mistaken for minor inconveniences, but if the machine used to run quietly and now rattles louder with every spin cycle, it is worth finding out the cause. At the same time, not every foreign sound means a breakdown: sometimes it is enough to distribute the laundry properly or check the appliance's installation.

Noise and vibration

The first sign is the machine rattling louder than usual. A hum resembling an airplane roar, grinding or metallic rustling when the drum rotates may indicate worn bearings; the noise often intensifies at high spin speeds. A clanging sound and rattling can occur due to a foreign object — a coin or a bra underwire caught between parts. With strong grinding or metallic banging, the expert advises not to continue washing until the cause is determined, after first switching off the machine and inspecting the drum and accessible areas of the seal. The second sign is the machine 'traveling' around the bathroom. Strong vibration does not always indicate a malfunction: laundry can bunch into a lump, especially if there is a single heavy item inside, such as a blanket or a terry robe. But if the machine regularly jumps, shifts or hits furniture, there may be problems with installation, shock absorbers or the drum suspension. The specialist advised avoiding overloading, and if the machine was recently installed, checking whether the transport bolts have been removed. In any case, you need to stop the program, wait for the drum to stop and spread out the laundry; if the vibration recurs with a normal load, diagnostics are needed, since a rocking machine can damage hoses and other parts.

Wet laundry and leaks

The third sign is laundry remaining too wet after washing. The machine may fail to drain water or reduce spin speed due to load imbalance; the cause can be a clogged pump filter or drain path, as well as washing bulky items that are hard to distribute evenly. It is worth checking whether water remains in the drum and paying attention to the error code on the display. If the water does not drain or the problem recurs, you should contact a specialist and not run the spin cycle again; before cleaning the filter, read the manual — hot water may remain inside. The fourth sign is puddles under the machine. Even a small leak is a reason to be alert: possible causes include a damaged door cuff, a loose hose connection, a problem with the drain filter or a malfunction of internal pipes. If water appears near the door, inspect the rubber seal; if at the back, the hose connections. The location of the puddle does not always coincide with the source of the leak, as water can run down the body. In case of a leak, stop the wash, disconnect the power, shut off the water supply and inspect accessible connections without disassembling the body; if the leak recurs, the machine should not be used until checked by a specialist.

Burning smell — the most alarming signal

The fifth sign is a smell of burnt rubber or wiring, which the expert called one of the most alarming. A smell of burnt rubber may indicate drive belt slippage or overheating of mechanical components, while a smell of heated insulation may indicate a possible electrical fault. 'Don't wait until the machine stops working completely. The earlier a fault is detected, the greater the chances of avoiding damage to other components and saving on repairs. And in case of a burning smell, smoke, strong grinding, pronounced vibration or a leak, it is safer to stop using it immediately,' Nikonorov concluded.
