Antarctic strait named after former BBC science correspondent Jonathan Amos

The Place-names Committee of the British Antarctic Territory has given the name Amos Channel to the strait between Rothschild Island and Alexander Island. The strait appeared after the ice mass connecting the islands broke apart. Amos was honoured for his 38 years at the BBC, where he covered Antarctic research, icebergs, the fate of penguin colonies and the discovery of the ship Endurance.

Bristol resident heads for the third time as postmaster to the world's southernmost post office in Antarctica

George Clarke from Bristol will once again take up the post of postmaster at Port Lockroy — a post office on Goudier Island, where he will work from October to March among a thousand penguins. Thwaites Glacier is melting faster than previous estimates and could raise sea levels twice as much by 2100

A new study in Nature Communications found that the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica could contribute up to 30 mm to global sea level rise by 2100 — twice the previous estimate of 15 mm. The cause is 'tidal pumping': warm water penetrates beneath the ice. There is about a 60% probability that by 2100 the glacier will detach from the restraining Mugins Ridge, possibly as early as the late 2030s.

Thwaites Glacier will keep melting even if oceans cool, scientists find

A British Antarctic Survey study showed that the 'Doomsday Glacier' in West Antarctica will lose ice for at least 150 years even with oceanic melting switched off in models. A full collapse of the ice sheet would add about 65 cm to sea level. The neighbouring Pine Island Glacier, by contrast, would recover under similar conditions.

Spanish 'wind sled' expedition to cross Antarctica without fossil fuels

Polar explorer Ramón Larramendi will lead the Trineo de Viento Antártida 2026-2027 expedition: about 3,400 km across the Antarctic interior in roughly 80 days using kites and solar energy. The campaign will carry out 16 scientific projects, and the four-person crew itself will become a subject of isolation research for future space missions.
