The key facts

  • Construction of a multi-story building in the Fidoiylar mahalla was stopped after a court annulled the documents in 2024, but the excavation pit remains open
  • Residents fear the collapse of the pit walls near a school and a roadway
  • Appeals to the authorities have brought no results for two years, residents say

A cancelled construction project left behind an excavation pit

In the Fidoiylar mahalla of the Yashnobod district of Tashkent, a plot originally allocated for a consumer services facility was transferred for the construction of a multi-story residential building. The work was started by the company WEST-EAST GROUP LLC, but due to residents' protests the matter went to court: in 2024, the documents on the basis of which the construction was carried out were annulled, Kun.uz reports. The construction stopped, but the large excavation pit on the site remains open — its walls are crumbling, and the area is left unattended.

Residents: appeals bring no results

According to mahalla residents, they have repeatedly contacted various authorities, but the responses have not helped solve the problem. «We have been fighting this problem for two years. Reply letters keep coming, but there is no result. In theory, this should be a green zone — it could have been made into a beautiful place with fountains, benches and trees. But they wanted to turn it into a building. We also have the right to live in a good place,» Kun.uz quotes one of the residents. Another resident is indignant at the choice of a cramped plot for a multi-story building, where there is nowhere to walk. According to the townspeople, they were previously promised that no multi-story buildings would be built here and that a house of culture would appear on the site instead, but these plans were never realized.

Danger to children near a school

In addition to their protests against the construction itself, residents are worried about the current state of the excavation pit. Its walls have collapsed several times; a school is located nearby, children regularly walk past, and through gaps in the fencing they can get inside. «I sent appeals with photographs of the falling walls to the relevant authorities. Then the walls were restored, but the pit itself is still open. There is a school nearby, children walk by, there are many cars. The wall reaches the edge of the road and could collapse at any moment. It is raining right now. This is very dangerous,» says the mahalla chairman. Residents emphasize that they are asking for the minimum — to fill in the excavation pit.
