The key facts
- Restrictions are in effect across the entire territory of Crimea, according to Krymenergo
- The reason cited was the elimination of electrical network overloads to prevent accidents
- On November 6, Sergey Aksyonov stated that the situation in the region was difficult and that emergency crews were working in an intensified mode
Restrictions across the entire peninsula
Temporary restrictions on electricity consumption have been introduced across the entire territory of Crimea. On Saturday, November 7, the State Unitary Enterprise Krymenergo announced this on its VKontakte page. The company explained that the shutdowns of power lines and grid equipment are necessary to eliminate overloads in the electrical networks and to prevent accidents in the power system.
What the authorities said in previous days
The day before, on November 6, the head of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, stated that the government was doing everything possible to resolve the power supply problems and that all emergency crews were working in an intensified mode; he described the situation in the region as difficult. A day earlier, on November 5, Aksyonov had reported electricity problems in the republic due to an accident on trunk power grids outside the region.
Context
Earlier, on October 24, it was reported that water and electricity supplies in Crimea had been restricted due to a strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Thus, the new restrictions come against the backdrop of ongoing power supply problems in the region: Krymenergo links the current shutdowns to network overloads, whereas previously an accident on trunk grids outside the peninsula was cited.
