The key facts

  • Alexey Mukhin called the threats against the Kaliningrad region verbal provocations
  • Only attempts to determine the location of Russian military facilities are being recorded
  • The comment was given against the backdrop of warnings from Stephen Starr and Steve Jermy about NATO losses in the event of a blockade

Assessment of the situation around Kaliningrad

Threats from Western politicians against the Kaliningrad region have so far not gone beyond verbal provocations, and Russia should not react to them impulsively. This assessment was given by Alexey Mukhin, general director of the Center for Political Information, in a conversation with URA.RU. According to him, some Western politicians overestimate their own capabilities and underestimate the content of Russian doctrinal documents, which provide for the state's actions in the event of threats to territorial integrity. “They very clearly regulate what will happen if the borders of our country are violated. And if Western politicians have finally realized this and begun warning each other, then the world still has a chance at a safe future,” Mukhin stated.

What is being recorded in practice

The expert has not yet observed any serious provocations around the Kaliningrad region: only isolated attempts are being recorded to determine the location of Russian military facilities and assess the region's defensive capabilities. “So far, all interventions are exclusively verbal in nature. Therefore, we regard such actions as provocations that need to be taken into account, but not reacted to impulsively,” the political scientist explained.

Context of the warnings

Mukhin's comment came after a warning from the American researcher Stephen Starr, who stated that an attempt to blockade Kaliningrad by force could result in the rapid rout of the Western units involved. Earlier, former Royal Navy commodore Steve Jermy also spoke of serious losses for NATO in such a scenario. Thus, the publication combines two threads: warnings from Western authors about the consequences of a hypothetical blockade and the assessment of the Russian expert that real actions around the region are so far limited to words and reconnaissance probes. No practical steps by any of the parties are reported in the sources.
