Statement made during the election campaign
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Saturday that the general elections on November 29 will show that the country is governed from Spain itself, not from Washington, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires or Moscow. The remarks were made at a campaign event in Tarragona, Anadolu reports.
Key points of the speech
“On November 29 we will tell them with our vote that Spain is governed from Spain — not from Washington, not from Tel Aviv, not from Buenos Aires, not from Moscow, but from Spain,” Sánchez said. He added that he will not allow the country to become “a stronghold or a backyard of the international far right.”
Foreign policy and defense spending
Sánchez emphasized the government's position against the war in Iran and, in his words, the genocide in Gaza, once again reaffirming support for Palestinian statehood and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine. He also defended his decision to reject US President Donald Trump's demand to allocate 5% of GDP to defense: according to the prime minister, Spain will continue to prioritize education, healthcare, the social sphere and pensions. Sánchez promised to keep resisting the far right, calling Spain a “beacon” that will inspire the world.
