The key facts

  • Elon Musk stated on X that Blindsight is technically ready and awaits regulatory approval
  • The implant connects to the brain and is designed for people with congenital blindness as well
  • The condition for implantation is an undamaged visual cortex

Elon Musk announced that Blindsight is ready

The company Neuralink will present the Blindsight device, which restores the ability to see to people with impaired or fully lost vision. Elon Musk announced this on his account on the social network X, reports Kun.uz. According to him, this is the company's second product: 'The name speaks for itself — it will enable even those who have lost their sight or were born blind to see. The device is technically ready. All that remains is to obtain approval from regulators.'

What is known about the device

The Blindsight project was presented by Neuralink back in September 2024. It is an implant connected to the brain with the aim of restoring vision. The main requirement for patients is an undamaged visual cortex, that is, the part of the cortex responsible for processing visual information. Thus, the device is intended for people whose problem lies in the eyes or the visual pathway, but not in the cortex itself.

Context: Telepathy and Neuralink's plans

In the same post, Musk also recalled the company's first device — Telepathy, presented in 2024. It allows information to be transmitted to a computer or to other people by the power of thought. According to Musk, in the future the speed of data transfer through such neural interfaces may significantly exceed the speed of human speech or typing. The publication provides no data on the timing of Blindsight's clinical trials or on regulatory decisions.
