The biggest overhaul since being named the world's best airline
Singapore Airlines has announced an investment of S$2 billion (€1.4 billion) in the modernisation of long-haul cabins, covering all classes: first, business, premium economy and economy. The news was reported by euronews. The outlet cites the airline's recent title as the world's best airline and competition from Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific, which, in the publication's wording, are 'hot on its heels'. The new cabin products will appear from the second half of 2027 on refurbished long-haul and ultra-long-haul Airbus A350-900s, as well as on new Boeing 777-9s. More than 5,000 frequent travellers, customers, employees and industry experts took part in the design development through focus groups, surveys and concept testing.
What will change on board
The most notable innovations are in first class: passengers in the centre seats will be able to convert their seats into a two-seat sofa by day and, at night, into the largest double bed in commercial aviation, measuring 203 cm long and 152 cm wide. There will be a personal wardrobe, an amenity drawer, a storage compartment for hand luggage under the ottoman, and a table suitable for dining together or working. Business class will get sliding doors for privacy, a seat pitch of 127 cm, and seats that convert into a bed 200 cm long and up to 61 cm wide. Premium economy will offer a seat pitch of 101 cm, a four-position headrest and a leg rest with an adjustable foot support; economy will have a seat pitch of 78 to 81 cm and an adjustable headrest. All classes will feature USB-C ports, with some aircraft also offering USB-A, AC power outlets or wireless charging; headphones will be able to connect to the KrisWorld system via Bluetooth. Service details will also be refreshed: amenity kits with SISLEY products in first class, BYREDO in business class and INK & WATER in premium economy; business class passengers will receive pyjamas for the first time, and the menu will be expanded with more than 100 updated snacks, main courses and desserts.
Comment from the airline
Singapore Airlines' Chief Commercial Officer Lee Lik Hsin said that each class was designed separately, but they are united by the aim of making the passenger experience 'more comfortable, flexible and enjoyable' and giving passengers more control over their flight — whether working, dining, relaxing or sleeping. For passengers, the practical significance of the announcement is that this is not a one-off rebranding but a phased programme with a concrete timeline: the first refurbished aircraft will enter service in the second half of 2027, and it is precisely on the long-haul A350-900 and Boeing 777-9 routes that the level of comfort will change in all classes, including economy.
