The key facts

  • GdeRabota.ru calculation: at a price of 35,000 rubles per kg, an average salary of 103,842 rubles buys about 2.97 kg of caviar
  • A year earlier, with a salary of 100,360 rubles and a price of about 9,230 rubles per kg, the ratio was roughly 10.9 kg
  • According to a survey by Roskachestvo and Finansy Mail, 23% of Russians prefer pink salmon caviar

A scenario-based calculation ahead of the New Year

The GdeRabota.ru service has prepared a scenario-based calculation of the purchasing power of the average salary in relation to red caviar ahead of the New Year, Gazeta.Ru has reviewed it. The analysts assumed that by the holiday a kilogram of red caviar could cost 35,000 rubles. As the income figure, they took the September 2026 indicator — an average offered salary of 103,842 rubles. At the price used in the calculation, this amount would be enough for approximately 2.97 kg of the product.

Comparison with last year

For comparison, the service cited data from late 2025: back then the salary was 100,360 rubles, and a kilogram of red caviar cost about 9,230 rubles, which corresponded to roughly 10.9 kg per average salary. “Thus, one average salary will buy about 3 kg of red caviar — 8 kg less than a year earlier. Over the year, the average offered salary grew by about 3.5%, while the projected price of red caviar compared with late 2025 increased almost fourfold,” the service's analysts noted. Thus, according to the calculation, salary growth proved disproportionate to the rise in the product's price: the purchasing power of the average offered salary, expressed in caviar terms, fell roughly 3.7 times.

Consumer preferences

Additionally, the results of a survey conducted by the Roskachestvo Center for the Study of Consumer Behavior together with Finansy Mail are cited: every fourth Russian respondent (23%) prefers pink salmon caviar among all types of red caviar. It is also worth noting that the GdeRabota.ru calculation is scenario-based: the price of 35,000 rubles per kilogram is a forecast laid down by the analysts for the New Year, not a confirmed level of current prices.
