Proverbs and sayings are becoming fashionable in the everyday speech of Russians, Yelena Yampolskaya, chairwoman of the Council under the President for implementing state policy in the field of supporting the Russian language and the languages of the peoples of Russia, told RIA Novosti. «In particular, the president [of Russia, Vladimir Putin], as you know, constantly uses these unquestionable ornaments of Russian speech,» said the presidential adviser on culture and arts, answering a question about the use of proverbs in the everyday speech of Russians.
The most popular proverbs
Earlier, the most popular proverbs among Russians were named. The survey showed that the most common phrase was «No pain, no gain» (literally: «Without effort, you won't even catch a fish from the pond»). Second place went to the proverb «Measure seven times, cut once», and third to «Work isn't a wolf, it won't run away into the forest». The top 10 also included «The slower you go, the further you'll get», «Time for work, an hour for play», «Patience and work will grind through everything», «Live and learn» and others.
Where proverbs are used
Russians said they most often use proverbs in everyday domestic situations, when assessing human qualities and actions, as well as in friendship and relationships with those around them. According to Yampolskaya, proverbs and sayings reflect the many facets of the Russian language: they are not merely a grammatical foundation, but a bearer of meaning, values, feelings and emotions.
Context
Earlier, «cringe» topped the list of words that irritate Russians. In addition, in September Yampolskaya became head of the Council under the President for implementing state policy in the field of supporting the Russian language and the languages of the peoples of Russia.
