The key facts

  • Static electricity worsens in winter due to dry air in heated indoor spaces
  • Leave-in sprays and serums, a humidifier (40–60%), natural fabrics, and wooden or carbon combs help
  • According to the expert, drinking plenty of fluids does not solve the problem; clothing anti-static products should not be applied to hair

Why hair becomes more static in winter

During the heating season, indoor air becomes dry, hair loses moisture faster, and the problem of static electricity worsens. This was told to Gazeta.Ru by dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist and trichologist Anastasia Mosina. According to her, leave-in hair care helps solve the problem: sprays, serums and creams create a thin film on the hair surface that smooths the cuticle scales and reduces friction between strands and external objects.

What works and what doesn't

Humid air reduces static charge, so the trichologist recommends using a humidifier — indoor humidity should be around 40–60%. At the same time, in the expert's opinion, drinking plenty of fluids, contrary to popular belief, will not solve the static problem, although it is beneficial in itself.

Clothing, combs and a comprehensive approach

Mosina recommended choosing hats and clothing made of natural fabrics: they cause less friction, whereas synthetics (acrylic) and coarse wool increase static. The comb matters too: plastic and metal ones accumulate static charge and transfer it to the hair, so it is better to switch to wooden ones (birch, oak, sandalwood) or those with an anti-static coating, such as carbon. She does not advise applying clothing anti-static products to hair. The expert emphasized that a comprehensive approach is needed: if you wear a synthetic hat and blow-dry your hair with a hot dryer without heat protection, the effect of the other measures will be weak.
