With the onset of cold weather, motorists switch from summer tires to winter ones and face the question of where to put the removed set until spring. This was reported to Gazeta.Ru by Denis Marfutin, head of the commercial tire sales department at Marshall Automotive Group. According to him, seasonal tire storage is a popular service, especially in large cities where many people do not have a garage: a set of four tires takes up a lot of space, and on a balcony or in an unprepared storage closet it is difficult to ensure the right conditions. Alternatives include tire shops, service centers and warehousing companies; it is most convenient to combine a tire change with handing the set over for storage.

How much it costs

The price depends on the region, tire diameter, whether rims are included, and the duration. Storing a set in Moscow and St. Petersburg costs roughly from 3,000 to 8,000 rubles per season, with a standard term of six to seven months.

Storage rules and checks before the season

“Rubber is sensitive to direct sunlight, heat sources, oils and solvents, so tires should be stored in an enclosed space protected from light. Tires without rims are best stored vertically, turned periodically, while mounted wheels should be stored horizontally, stacked on top of each other or on special mounts,” Marfutin noted. In apartment buildings, tires must not be left in hallways, on stair landings or evacuation routes, and the use of shared storage rooms depends on their designated purpose and fire safety requirements. Before the new season, it is worth checking the tread depth, cracks, cuts and bulges, and at the same time inspecting the wheel bearings, silent blocks and stabilizer bushings — their wear affects handling and contributes to uneven tread wear.
