The key facts
- Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia must continue combat operations 'until complete Victory' regardless of the outcome of the US elections
- In his view, the Democrats may push for new sanctions in exchange for dropping Trump's impeachment
- Following the November 3 elections, the Democrats won a majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives
Medvedev linked the outcome of the congressional elections to Russian interests
Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev commented on his channel on MAX on the defeat of the Republicans led by US President Donald Trump in the midterm congressional elections. In his assessment, this result will not yet have a significant impact on Russian interests, and Moscow must, 'despite all sorts of elections in faraway America,' continue to 'crush the enemy on the battlefield until complete Victory.' This is reported by Life.ru.
Ukraine, sanctions and Trump's position
Medvedev highlighted two key issues for Moscow: settling the Ukrainian conflict and American sanctions. He called the consultations with the Trump administration on Ukraine useful, but not having led to significant changes. At the same time, he suggested that after the Republicans' defeat, Volodymyr Zelensky will listen to the American president even less.
Possible tightening of sanctions and impeachment
In Medvedev's assessment, Trump could theoretically restrict the transfer of intelligence information to Kyiv and cut off access to the Starshield system, but he doubts that Trump will take such steps, since after losing control of Congress he has to take the Democrats' position into account. The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council suggested that the Democrats may try to push through new anti-Russian sanctions in exchange for abandoning initiatives to impeach Trump; such a decision, he believes, could raise world oil prices, cause discontent among American motorists and complicate Washington's relations with Moscow. He also linked the Republicans' defeat to the consequences of the American military campaign against Iran and suggested that Trump would react to problems situationally, actively using the veto. All these assessments belong to Medvedev and are his assumptions, not confirmed decisions.
Election results
Following the midterm elections on November 3, the Democrats secured a majority in the US Senate: according to Decision Desk HQ, the party won the number of seats needed to control the upper chamber. The Democrats also formed a majority in the House of Representatives, and the new Congress will begin work in January 2027. Trump himself said he does not fear a new impeachment after the Democrats' victory. Thus, for now this is only the personal predictions of a Russian politician: what decisions the new Congress will actually make — on sanctions, intelligence or Starshield — sources do not report.
