A win against the backdrop of league struggles

The Champions League victory came as a response to a poor run in the English championship. On October 31, City, led by Enzo Maresca, lost to Brighton 0:1 — the only goal was scored in the 11th minute by Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari. It was their second consecutive defeat in the Premier League: in the previous round the Manchester side lost 1:2 to Aston Villa, which ended their streak of seven straight wins. Thus, the European match allowed the team to snap a two-game losing streak, although in the tournament where City sit seventh, the situation remains unchanged.
