The key facts

  • Michael Alfonso, 26, won Wisconsin's 7th district and became the youngest member of the House of Representatives and the first congressman born in the 2000s.
  • Melat Kiros, 29, won Colorado's 1st district and became the first Generation Z woman in Congress; earlier she defeated incumbent Democrat Diana DeGette in the primary.
  • Both joined the cohort of young legislators alongside Maxwell Frost, the first Generation Z congressman, who was re-elected in 2026 without an opponent on the ballot.

Two politicians under 30 elected to the House of Representatives

In the US midterm elections, according to the Anadolu agency, two candidates in their twenties entered Congress — a notable renewal compared with the previous composition of the House of Representatives, which had no legislators born in the 2000s.

The youngest congressman — a Republican from Wisconsin

Republican Michael Alfonso, 26, defeated Democrat Fred Clark in Wisconsin's 7th congressional district. He became the youngest sitting member of the House of Representatives and the first person born in the 2000s who will serve in Congress. Alfonso is a political newcomer and the son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy; he ran on an 'America First' platform, actively supported President Donald Trump, and his campaign emphasized conservative priorities: education, healthcare and vocational training.

The first Generation Z woman in Congress

Democrat Melat Kiros, 29, a lawyer of Ethiopian origin and a democratic socialist, won Colorado's 1st congressional district, becoming the first Generation Z woman elected to Congress. Before that, she defeated longtime incumbent Democratic congresswoman Diana DeGette in the primary. According to Anadolu, Kiros is a prominent critic of Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip: she has called for an embargo on arms supplies to Israel and an end to American military support, describing the war in Gaza as genocide, and also advocates for Medicare for All and universal child care.

They join the Generation Z 'caucus'

Alfonso and Kiros join Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost, 29, who in 2022 became the first Generation Z member of Congress and in 2026 was re-elected to a new term without facing an opponent on the ballot. Frost supports Palestinian self-determination. As a result of these elections, three Generation Z legislators are now represented in the House — two Democrats and one Republican — expanding this generation's presence in national politics from one person to three in a single cycle.
