Number of cases rises to 19 people

In the Saratov region, 19 people have been diagnosed with opisthorchiasis — a parasitic infection — after eating dried fish. This was reported by the press service of the regional Rospotrebnadzor; Gazeta.Ru Gazeta.Ru. covers the situation. All of those affected bought dried fish at the Pivzavod store in the city of Pugachev.

What the laboratory showed and what measures have been taken

According to laboratory tests, opisthorchiasis pathogens were found in the fish purchased by those affected. 35 kg of dried fish was withdrawn from sale, and the sale of other fish products was suspended.

How the situation developed

The first reports appeared on November 1: several residents of Pugachev sought medical help complaining of feeling unwell after eating dried fish bought at a local store. At that time, the regional health ministry told TASS that seven people had been hospitalized. Thus, over several days the number of cases grew from seven to 19 people. The regional Investigative Committee has opened an inquiry into the incident, and the prosecutor's office will assess compliance with sanitary and epidemiological requirements and food quality and safety legislation.
