The key facts
- Democrats won both chambers of Congress, stripping Republicans of control
- The White House posted 'Trump is still your President' after the election
- Trump said the result was not a 'repudiation of him' and allowed for working with Democrats
The White House's reaction to the election results
On Wednesday, the White House posted on its X account an image of President Donald Trump leaning over the Resolute desk, captioned 'PSA: Trump is still your President.' The message appeared after Tuesday's midterm elections, in which Democrats achieved significant gains, taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate and ending Republican control of Congress, Anadolu reports.
What the results change
According to the outlet's assessment, the election results should give Democrats more opportunities to block Trump's legislative agenda: previously Republicans held only a narrow majority in both chambers, and now its loss changes the balance of power in Congress.
Trump's own reaction
Trump earlier acknowledged that Democrats 'did well,' but said Republican candidates would have performed better if he himself had been on the ballot. According to him, voters supported his policy on Iran, but 'probably were not ready' to accept the short-term costs in the form of rising gasoline prices. He praised the Democratic candidates for running a hard-fought campaign and stressed that the result is not a 'repudiation of him.' The President also said he is ready to work with Democrats 'on many, many issues,' including immigration.
