Election results

The midterm elections to the US Congress ended in a Democratic victory in both chambers, Kun.uz reports, citing Associated Press tallies. In the Senate, where 51 seats out of 100 are needed for a majority (in the event of a 50:50 tie, the deciding vote would belong to the Republican, Vice President JD Vance), Democrats took at least seven seats from Republicans and won 53 mandates. Victories were secured in North and South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Maine and Kansas.

The House of Representatives and governors

In the 435-seat House of Representatives, where a majority requires 218 seats, Democrats have so far won 223 districts and Republicans 133, taking 25 districts from their opponents. The redrawing of electoral districts in a number of states, carried out at Donald Trump's initiative, did not save the Republicans from defeat: among other places, Democratic candidates won in six districts of Kentucky, which Trump had carried in 2024 by a 15-percentage-point margin. Gubernatorial elections were held in 36 states: Democrats took four posts. According to AP tallies, 25 states are currently governed by Democrats and 19 by Republicans, with counting still under way in the remaining six.

A sensation in Texas and new powers

The result in Texas attracted the most attention, where state legislator Gina Inocencio defeated Greg Abbott, who had served three terms as governor. She will become the first Democratic governor of the state in nearly 40 years. The new Congress will begin work on January 3. A majority in the House of Representatives will give Democrats control of the committees, and therefore the power to summon witnesses and conduct investigations into the administration, Trump's family and his business.
