The key facts

  • Peskov: a continuation of the Putin, Trump and Xi Jinping talks in Miami is «for now» not planned
  • The day before, the Kremlin reported work on coordinating a trilateral meeting at the APEC summit in China
  • The APEC summit in Shenzhen will take place on November 18–19

Kremlin does not confirm continuation of talks in Miami

There is currently no talk of continuing the talks between Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Miami. This was stated on Channel One by the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov: «No, there is no talk of that for now.» This is reported by Gazeta.Ru.

What was said earlier about the trilateral meeting

The statement appears to be a clarification of the Kremlin's previous reports. The day before, on November 3, Peskov said that work on coordinating a trilateral meeting of the leaders of Russia, the United States and China was underway, and that at this point there is a general understanding of possible talks at the APEC summit in China. Back on October 25, the president's aide Yuri Ushakov said that preparations for the trilateral talks had already begun: if circumstances are favorable, the leaders may meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit, which will take place in the Chinese city of Shenzhen on November 18–19.

What is known and what remains unclear

Thus, the confirmed change concerns the venue: whereas earlier the discussion concerned a possible meeting at APEC in Shenzhen, Peskov has now separately ruled out — for now — a continuation of the talks at the G20 in Miami. At the same time, his words do not imply that the idea of a trilateral meeting has been dropped from the agenda: the wording «for now» and the earlier statements about preparations leave the question open. Judging by the Kremlin's reports, there is still no final decision on the venue and format of the leaders' meeting.
