The key facts

  • Cyclone Murasu made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday, killing two people — according to the state Disaster Management Authority

  • Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu appealed to the central government for assistance and conducted an aerial survey of the flooded areas

Two cyclones in one week

The severe cyclonic storm Murasu made landfall on the coast of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. According to the state Disaster Management Authority, two people were killed in incidents linked to the cyclone, Anadolu reports. The storm left destruction across a significant part of the state.

The authorities' response

The situation took on a particular scale because Murasu struck the state just days after Cyclone Arnab, which hit India's southern coast and claimed the lives of at least five people. On Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who briefed him on the damage from both cyclones. 'The Chief Minister explained to the Prime Minister the damage caused by the cyclones. He appealed to the central government to provide the state with the necessary assistance, pointing to significant losses in various sectors,' the Chief Minister's office said in a statement published on X.

Flooded villages and damaged roads

On Wednesday, Naidu also said he had conducted an aerial survey of the areas hit by flooding as Murasu passed through. According to him, a number of villages remain flooded and roads are damaged. The full assessment of the damage and the decision on federal assistance remained open at the time of publication — the source reports only the appeal itself to the central government, not its outcome.
