Death toll reaches 31

The number of people killed in bear attacks in Russia has reached 31 — these figures from the regions are reported by TASS, as cited by Gazeta.Ru. Five of the deaths occurred in Tomsk Region, where hungry predators are coming out to people. Earlier, on November 2, it was reported that a man-eating bear mauled a man to death in Kamchatka.

Tragedy near Kievsky

One of the most recent incidents took place in the Tolparovo rural settlement of Tomsk Region. As the head of the settlement administration, Lyudmila Gavrilova, told the agency, a 55-year-old resident of the village of Kievsky set off for a forest cabin for several days, accompanied by dogs. When the hunter failed to return on time, his relatives went to look for him. At the winter cabin they found signs of a struggle: the doors were open, everything was smashed, and outside there were traces of a bear attack and the man's remains.

Why bears are coming out to people

The rise in the number of incidents is explained by two factors: a significant increase in the bear population in the forests in recent years and a poor harvest of wild berries and plants in the taiga in 2026. Due to the shortage of natural food, the animals are searching for food near people, which leads to most of the tragedies. In connection with the sharp increase in attacks, a state of heightened readiness has been declared in Tomsk Region.
