A new hotel in Times Square

A major new hotel, The StandardX Times Square, will appear in New York's Times Square by the end of the decade, reports euronews. The opening is scheduled for the second half of 2028. The 1,800-room building will house restaurants, bars and nightlife venues, while the upper floors will feature an indoor free-fall attraction, an observation deck more than 1,000 feet (about 300 meters) above Manhattan, and a rooftop pool.

The StandardX format and words from Hyatt's creative director

StandardX is a simplified and more affordable version of The Standard brand, which is owned by Hyatt. So far the only such hotel in the world operates in Melbourne, so the New York project will be the second. The Standard itself already has two properties in New York (East Village and Highline), as well as hotels in London, Ibiza and Brussels, and a hotel in Lisbon will open soon. 'A lot will be happening right inside the building in Times Square. I like that. It's energetic, theatrical and completely crazy,' said Hyatt creative director Amar Lalvani.

What else is changing in New York's hotel market

The announcement fits into a series of changes that euronews covered in separate articles. The British restaurant The Wolseley is preparing to open its flagship hotel at the beginning of next year at 130 West 44th Street in Midtown, in the building of the former The Lambs Club. In 2027, Rockefeller Center will get the first hotel in its history — The Nell New York by Aspen Hospitality, with 130 rooms in former office space. At the same time, one of the city's landmark hotels, The Plaza, will close at the beginning of next year for a renovation lasting at least four years — meaning that at the time of The StandardX's opening, it will likely not yet have reopened.
