Fighting Resumes and Airport Attack

Clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthi group have resumed on several fronts south of the city of Taiz, the television channel reported on Thursday Yemen Today TV. According to the channel, fighting is underway on the Al-Akrud and Al-Masrah fronts, as well as in the village of Al-Ran in the Sabir al-Mawadim district.

The Situation Around Aden Airport

Against this backdrop, Aden International Airport resumed operations after missile strikes that followed Houthi threats to attack the facility. On Wednesday, according to witnesses interviewed by the Anadolu agency, a missile fell on the Al-Nasr camp near the airport, which houses the headquarters of the coast guard and the Yemeni Ministry of Interior. Later, the Yemeni army announced that two ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis had hit the airport: there were civilian casualties and material damage. Before the attack, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree urged people to leave the airport — this was reported by the group-affiliated channel Al-Masirah.

Conflict Context

Yemen has been at war since September 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and a number of other provinces. In March 2015, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in support of the country's internationally recognized government. Reports of the resumption of fighting and the strikes come from the involved parties and local television channels; independent verification of this information is not available in published sources.
