Rare border violation on the Curonian Spit
On the afternoon of October 25, Lithuanian border guards, using a technical surveillance system, spotted a man on the Baltic Sea coast walking along the dunes toward the Russian border. A border patrol was dispatched to the site, but by the time it arrived, the violator, who had ignored warning signs, had already crossed the state border and found himself in the Kaliningrad region. This was reported by the LRT portal citing the Lithuanian border service.
Detention and context
Some time later, the violator — who, according to LRT, turned out to be a Polish citizen — was detained by Russian border guards. The portal emphasizes that such border violations in this direction are extremely rare: the previous one was recorded in 2018.
Other incidents on the Baltic states' borders
In this connection, Gazeta.Ru recalls other recent reports of border crossings in the region. In August, it was reported that a group of illegal migrants sneaked into Latvia from Belarus through an underground tunnel. In Lithuania in early August, a tunnel about 1.5 meters deep, reinforced with logs and planks, was discovered; in total, 12 attempts to enter the country through underground passages have been recorded there since the beginning of the year. In addition, earlier in Poland, over a border violation, an underage Russian karate athlete was detained. These cases involve other sections of the border and other individuals, and apart from the general topic, the publications provide no grounds to link them with the incident on the Curonian Spit.
