Context

The civil war in Yemen has been ongoing since September 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and a number of provinces. The Saudi Arabia-led coalition has been supporting the country's internationally recognized government since March 2015. According to Anadolu, clashes between government forces and the Houthis have intensified in recent monthsand the group accuses the kingdom of involvement in attacks against it and responds with missile and drone strikes.

Significance of the pipeline

The East–West pipeline is one of the most important routes for transporting Saudi oil. It lies entirely within the kingdom, is operated by the state-owned Saudi Aramco, and stretches roughly 1,200 kilometers from the Abqaiq area in the east of the country to Yanbu on the Red Sea coast, providing a land-based alternative to maritime shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Editorial note: an attack on infrastructure of this scale affects not only Saudi Arabia but also global oil supply chains, yet there is no confirmed evidence of actual damage so far — only statements from the parties are known.
