Drone intercepted over Riyadh
The Saudi Arabia–led coalition said it intercepted and destroyed a drone in the Riyadh capital region. The coalition's spokesman announced this overnight into Sunday Major General Turki al-Maliki in a post on the X platform, Anadolu reports. He did not specify the drone's origin and provided no information on possible casualties or damage.
The situation the day before
On Saturday, the coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by Yemen's Houthi movement toward the Saudi cities of Taif and Yanbu, Anadolu reports. The Houthis, for their part, said they attacked Saudi airports, oil facilities and an air base, including Riyadh's main airport — King Khalid International Airport. The group called the attacks a response to Saudi airstrikes on Yemen.
Context and what remains unknown
According to Anadolu, the events come amid an escalation: the Houthis are attacking Saudi aviation and energy infrastructure, while the coalition is striking the group's positions in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has led a coalition in support of Yemen's internationally recognized government since 2015; the Houthis have controlled the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country since 2014. The editorial team notes: the coalition's statements contain no information about the drone's origin, its target, casualties or damage, so the scale of the incident cannot yet be assessed.
