The key facts

  • The KPRF initiative was sent on October 21 to head of government Mikhail Mishustin
  • It concerns only property already confiscated by court decision
  • According to the Prosecutor General's Office, more than 33,000 cars have been confiscated, over 5,500 sent to the SVO zone

The initiative was sent to Mishustin

Deputies of the KPRF faction proposed transferring confiscated cars free of charge to state and municipal institutions of healthcare, education, social protection, culture and sports. The corresponding initiative was sent on October 21 to Chairman of the Government of Russia Mikhail Mishustin, reports Gazeta.Ru, which has the document.

Authors and their arguments

The authors of the draft are deputies Nikolai Kolomeytsev, Alexey Kurinny, Maria Drobot, Georgy Kamnev and Senator of the Russian Federation Airat Gibatdinov. In their opinion, such a measure will help solve the problem of transport shortages in budget institutions, especially in regions with deficit budgets. Transferring confiscated cars to the state will reduce spending on the purchase of new transport and lower the costs of storing and selling seized property, KPRF emphasized.

The senator's position

“Hospitals, polyclinics, schools and kindergartens need transport. And the state has confiscated cars that could bring real benefit to people,” Gibatdinov told Gazeta.Ru. He stressed that this is not about “deliberately taking cars away from citizens”: “We are talking exclusively about property already confiscated by court decision. Today there is a practice of transferring such cars for the needs of the special military operation. We believe a similar mechanism could be provided for hospitals, schools, social services and other state institutions.”

Context: confiscation statistics
