The key facts

  • The industry's goal is 1 million tons of fish per year through intensive technologies; in the Balykchy district, complexes of 50 sotok each will be created around 24 wells, with production of at least 30 tons of trout and 10 jobs at each
  • By March 1, 2027, an inventory of more than 4,000 melioration wells will be conducted; those suitable for fish farming will be transferred to entrepreneurs on the basis of public-private partnership
  • Energy-efficient lemon greenhouses will be built on 100 hectares near nine mahallas of the Balykchy district; at least 1,000 people will be employed in 500 greenhouses, and next year 200 hectares of greenhouses for 2,000 families are planned in the regions

Presentation on fish farming and lemon growing

On October 20, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on the development of intensive fish farming and the creation of energy-efficient greenhouses for growing lemons, the presidential press service reported. The goal of the projects is to create new jobs and increase the population's income. The industry has been tasked with increasing fish production to 1 million tons per year through intensive technologies.

Fish farming complexes in the Balykchy district

In the Balykchy district of the Andijan region, around 24 melioration vertical wells, full-cycle intensive fish farming complexes are planned to be created — from supplying fry and feed to growing, processing, storing and selling fish. Each project occupies 50 sotok and provides for growing at least 30 tons of trout per year and creating 10 jobs. To manage the projects in a unified system, it was proposed to create a fish farming holding.

Inventory of wells and other projects

To spread the Balykchy experience to other regions, by March 1, 2027, an inventory of more than 4,000 melioration vertical wells across the republic has been ordered. Wells suitable for fish farming are planned to be transferred to leading entrepreneurs for management on the basis of public-private partnership. Projects for growing and processing cold-water fish in Khanabad and for developing fish farming based on reservoirs in Ulugnor were also presented.

Energy-efficient greenhouses for lemons

The second part of the presentation was devoted to the development of lemon growing in the Balykchy district. It is planned to build energy-efficient greenhouses on an area of 100 hectares near nine mahallas and hand them over to entrepreneurs fully ready. Growing, sorting, processing, packaging, storing and selling lemons will be combined into a single cooperation chain. According to preliminary calculations, at least 1,000 people from local families will be provided with jobs in 500 greenhouses. Before the lemon saplings begin to bear fruit, additional income can be earned by growing intermediate crops.

Expansion to 200 hectares and instructions

Based on the Balykchy experience, next year energy-efficient greenhouse complexes with a total area of 200 hectares are planned to be created in the regions for low-income families and the unemployed. This is expected to increase the income of 2,000 families. Following the presentation, Mirziyoyev instructed responsible officials to take measures for financial support of projects aimed at reducing poverty, as well as to compensate the costs of training the population in fish farming and lemon growing.
