Australian inmate loses court battle over right to eat Vegemite in prison
The Supreme Court of the state of Victoria rejected the appeal of 54-year-old Andre McKechnie, who is serving a life sentence for murder and challenged the ban on Vegemite in force in prisons since 2006. He argued that the ban deprives him of the right to 'enjoy his culture as an Australian.' Judge Harris ruled that the law does not require providing inmates with products of cultural significance.
