Japan launches MMX spacecraft for first-ever delivery of samples from Phobos
An H3 rocket lifted off the MMX probe from the Tanegashima spaceport on October 20, 2026. The spacecraft is to reach Mars in August 2027, collect at least 10 grams of Phobos soil and return the samples to Earth in 2031. Five space agencies are taking part in the mission, including JAXA, NASA, and the French and German agencies.
