European Parliament softens the 2035 car emissions target: from 100% to 87.5%
The European Parliament's environment committee backed a weakening of the CO2 emissions target for new cars and vans: instead of a full zero by 2035, a reduction of 87.5% with credit for 'green' steel. This is weaker than the European Commission proposed (90%). The decision reflects a shift in the balance of power in parliament and pressure from Germany, France and Italy, but still requires approval by the plenary and negotiations with EU countries.
