Fitch: fiscal pressure on the US will persist regardless of the outcome of the midterm elections
Fitch Ratings forecasts that rising spending on social obligations and the cost of debt servicing will keep increasing the US national debt regardless of which party controls Congress after the midterm elections. The federal budget deficit in fiscal year 2026 reached almost $2 trillion (6.1% of GDP), while the overall general government deficit is forecast to rise to 7.5% of GDP in 2026 and 7.6% in 2027.
