What the minister said

In Russia, the development of unified state textbooks in five subjects for students in grades 10–11 is nearing completion: Russian language, literature, chemistry, physics, and biology. This was announced by Russian Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov, as reported by TASS. According to him, the preparation of a unified line of labor (technology) textbooks for grades 5–9 is also at its final stage, meaning the update will affect both secondary and primary school levels.

How this aligns with earlier plans

Earlier, Life.ru reported on the Ministry of Education's plans to include the new state textbooks in the federal list by the end of 2026; the current statement concerns the completion of work on the editions, meaning the process is moving according to the previously announced schedule. Creating unified textbooks is part of the transition to common state educational standards: students from different regions should study subjects using consistent materials, which, as explained at the ministry, will ensure a unified approach to educational content regardless of where students study.

Context of the phased transition

The transition to state textbooks is proceeding in stages: unified history textbooks are already used in the school curriculum, updated materials on social studies have been prepared for several grades, and the ministry intends to extend the system to the remaining compulsory subjects. In addition, starting September 1, 2027, unified textbooks in six subjects will begin to be used in colleges and technical schools. In parallel, preparations are underway for a mandatory oral history exam for ninth-graders: it is planned to be introduced in the 2027/28 academic year, and the tasks will be based on the content of the state textbooks.
