The key facts

  • From next week, temperatures in Moscow will be 1–3°C above the climate norm
  • The start of meteorological winter, previously expected from November 13, will be pushed back to the final decade of autumn
  • Until midweek, daytime temperatures of around +3…5°C are expected, rising to +4…6°C by the end of the week

The warming will arrive starting Monday

Next week the weather will return Moscow to October — this was written in his Telegram channel by Mikhail Leus, lead specialist at the Phobos weather center. According to him, 'autumn will perk up': temperatures in the city will hold 1–3°C above the climate norm, and the start of meteorological winter, which had been expected from November 13, will be pushed back to the final decade of autumn.

What to expect during the week

The forecaster explained the mechanism of the warming: on Monday, weather control over the capital will pass to a baric ridge from the southwest — the term for an elongated area of relatively high atmospheric pressure compared with its surroundings. Until midweek, daytime temperatures will be around +3…5°C. On Thursday, a warm atmospheric front will begin to affect the city, bringing light precipitation. By the end of the workweek, precipitation will intensify, but daytime temperatures will rise to +4…6°C.

Context: weather problems on the eve

The news of the warming came against the backdrop of weather problems in other regions. As Gazeta.Ru notes, earlier wet snow caused a transport collapse and mass power outages in Krasnodar Krai; the areas at greatest risk were the mountainous districts of Kuban — the surroundings of Krasnaya Polyana, Mezmaya and Neftegorsk, while a storm warning was declared in Sochi and the federal territory of Sirius. In addition, motorists had earlier been warned about 'black ice' in Moscow and the Moscow region. Against this backdrop, the return of above-normal temperatures means that the icy conditions on the capital's roads should ease in the coming days, although precipitation is expected on Thursday and at the end of the week.
