The key facts

Arctic cold has reached the peninsula
The first snow has covered the mountainous areas of Crimea after Arctic cold swept into the peninsula. White flakes appeared on Ai-Petri and the Angarsky Pass, while in Simferopol rain gave way to wet snow that melts quickly without forming a lasting cover. Oksana Kovkova, duty forecaster at the Crimea Hydrometeorological Center, told RIA Novosti about this; Life.ru writes about the weather in the region Life.ru.
What is happening on the peninsula
The picture in the mountains and on the coast differs noticeably: in coastal areas rain is falling instead of snow. According to the Crimea Directorate for Hydrometeorology, the abrupt change in weather was caused by an Arctic cold front. In the mountains the temperature dropped below zero, while in other areas the cold snap was accompanied by precipitation and gusty wind. 'Snow fell in the mountains. Wet snow is also falling in the foothill areas and in Simferopol, but it is melting and there is no snow cover,' Life.ru quotes the forecaster as saying.
Temperature forecast and what comes next
According to the forecast of the regional Emergency Ministry directorate, on November 7 temperatures in Crimea are expected to reach two to seven degrees above zero, and in mountainous areas down to minus three to five degrees. The north-westerly wind will intensify in places up to 18 meters per second, while in Simferopol the air will warm up to only two to four degrees.
The bad weather will not last long
According to Kovkova, the bad weather will be short-lived: as early as November 8 the precipitation will begin to stop, and in the following days the temperature will gradually rise. Forecasters do not expect the first snow to mark the onset of stable winter weather.
First snow in the capital region too
The first snow has also fallen in Moscow and the Moscow region, where its appearance was linked to the passage of a cold atmospheric front. The first precipitation was recorded by weather stations in Novo-Ierusalim and Sheremetyevo, and then residents of Zelenograd and Istra spotted the snow. Forecaster Mikhail Leus warned that a temporary snow cover of one to two centimeters may form in some areas, but he did not expect it to last long due to the subsequent rise in temperature.
