Crash and gas leak in Liverpool city centre

In Liverpool city centre, at around 12:30 GMT, a Peugeot car crashed into the window of the Tiger Rock restaurant on North John Street, BBC News reports. The impact caused a gas leak, prompting firefighters and police to set up a cordon, while a structural engineer and a gas equipment specialist were sent to the scene.

Evacuation and transport restrictions

Three people who were in the restaurant at the time of the crash were checked for minor injuries, according to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. Neighbouring buildings have been evacuated as a precaution. The junctions of Dale Street and North John Street, as well as North John Street and Lord Street, have been closed. Buses are temporarily running on diverted routes: all Wirral Metro services terminate at Whitechapel, with the return journey starting from Sir Thomas Street.

What is known about the driver

According to Merseyside Police, the driver remained at the scene, and there is nothing to suggest the incident was deliberate. The services' statements do not currently say anything about the cause of the crash or how long it will take to deal with the aftermath of the leak.
