Capsized boat claims the life of an elderly boat operator

In Astrakhan Region, a 68-year-old man died on November 6 after an inflatable motorboat capsized on the Bakhtemir River. This was reported by the regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry. His 45-year-old son managed to reach the shore on his own, while the boat operator himself was pulled from the water by witnesses already showing no signs of life.

Circumstances of the incident

The tragedy occurred in the afternoon of November 6 near the village of Vakhrameyevo in the Ikryaninsky District. The father and son, who had come from Moscow, were traveling in an inflatable motorboat from the village of Fyodorovka toward Vakhrameyevo. According to preliminary information from rescuers, the elderly man lost control of the vessel, after which it capsized. At the time of the incident, there were strong waves on the river, and the depth in that section, according to GIMS inspectors, reaches 12–18 meters — meaning that a person who fell into the water without a life jacket and outside help had little chance of staying afloat.

Prosecutor's inspection

The Southern Transport Prosecutor's Office has organized an inspection of compliance with safety requirements in the operation of water transport. Based on its results, the oversight agency will decide whether there are grounds for taking additional response measures. The findings of the inspection have not been published at this time.

A similar case in the Moscow Region

Life.ru also recalls another recent incident: two workers drowned after a motorboat capsized at the Oktyabrsky sand quarry in Kolomna, in the Moscow Region. According to the investigation, four employees of a sand and sand-and-gravel mining company set out in a motorboat toward a floating dredger, where they were to repair a winch. This is a separate event, unrelated to the Astrakhan tragedy.
