The winning streak came to an end in Istanbul

Trabzonspor's seven-match winning streak under German coach Thomas Reis ended on Thursday with a 0:1 home defeat to Freiburg in the third round of the UEFA Conference League league phase, Anadolu reports.

How the match unfolded

The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute: after a corner from Vincenzo Grifo, Trabzonspor goalkeeper Andre Onana saved Igor Matanovic's header, but Kubler was quickest to react to the rebound and scored from close range. The hosts responded with long-range efforts: in the 29th minute Ernest Muci's shot went just wide of the left post, and in the 40th Mohamed Salah fired over the crossbar from inside the box. After the break, Trabzonspor kept pressing: in the 61st minute, following a cross from Muci and a lay-off from Paul Onuachu, Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus parried Salah's close-range shot. In the 85th minute, Onuachu's header from Salah's cross deflected off defender Jordi Makengo and went out for a corner; then Muci shot over the bar, and in stoppage time Backhaus came to the rescue again after Salah was through one-on-one.

What this means in the table

The defeat did not drastically change Trabzonspor's position: after three rounds, it has six points, just like Freiburg — the win allowed the German side to catch up with the Turkish club. For Reis's team, this was the first stumble after a run of seven consecutive victories, which, according to Anadolu, dated back to the start of his tenure at the club.
