The key facts

  • A 19-year-old resident of Transbaikalia ended up in intensive care with acute respiratory failure after vaping and died
  • Examination revealed a malignant tumor with secondary lesions in his brain
  • This is already the third such case in Russian publications in recent weeks: earlier, the death of a 17-year-old resident of Primorye was reported, as well as a teenager with 90% lung damage

What happened

In Transbaikalia, a 19-year-old young man died in intensive care after vaping. This was reported by the Telegram channel Baza, which is cited by Gazeta.Ru. According to an oncologist, before the attack and hospitalization, the young man had been smoking disposable fruit-flavored vapes.

How events unfolded in the hospital

It all began with severe shortness of breath — the young man called an ambulance for himself. After hospitalization, his condition was assessed as serious: he was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure and placed in the intensive care unit. During examination, it was found that the patient had a malignant tumor with secondary lesions in the brain. Doctors fought for his life for several days, but the young man died.

A series of similar reports

This is not the only such case reported in recent weeks. Earlier, a 17-year-old resident of Primorye who vaped was hospitalized with severe shortness of breath — he was found to have bilateral pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and tuberculosis; leukemia was then diagnosed; after respiratory failure developed, the patient was transferred to intensive care, where he soon died. Even earlier, there were reports of a teenager who vaped, in whom 90% lung damage was found. Notably, in the Transbaikalia case, an oncologist linked the attack to vaping, but the reports themselves do not reveal whether a causal link between vapes and the cancerous disease in the young patients was proven — in all the described cases, the patients were found to have serious concomitant diagnoses.
