The key facts

  • Grossi called on the parties to the conflict to exercise military restraint and protect nuclear facility personnel
  • The ZNPP depends on a single power line; strikes affected the Dniprovska substation
  • No new diesel fuel deliveries have arrived at the plant since March 2026

IAEA Warning

Continuing explosions near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and drone attacks are creating the risk of a serious nuclear accident. This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who demanded that the parties to the conflict exercise maximum military restraint and protect the personnel of nuclear facilities and the infrastructure supporting their operation. The statement was published on the agency's official website, as reported by Life.ru.

What experts on the ground are recording

The agency's experts, who are permanently stationed at the plant, continue to record the sounds of explosions, which at times occur directly next to it. Additional concern is raised by reports of drone strikes on the residential areas of nuclear facility workers and damage to power lines.

Power supply and fuel

The situation with external power supply remains particularly difficult: the plant depends on a single power line, whereas other Ukrainian nuclear facilities retain several connections to the grid. In recent days, strikes have also affected the Dniprovska substation, which is needed to restore another 750 kV line. The IAEA is seeking a local ceasefire so that specialists can carry out repair work. A separate problem is diesel fuel for backup generators, heating systems and radioactive waste handling equipment: according to the agency, no new deliveries have arrived at the plant since March 2026, although the reserves continue to be depleted. Grossi called for increasing the reserves ahead of winter.

Casualties among personnel

According to the plant administration, as a result of a drone attack on a civilian car in the area of the ZNPP two people were killed, including an employee of the plant. According to the plant's leadership, this was already the third worker killed in two weeks, and since April 2026 the number of casualties among personnel has reached 13. Plant representatives once again drew attention to the danger of attacks on civilian transport and populated areas near the nuclear plant.
