The key facts

  • A tourist from Canada waited seven hours for rescue on a ledge measuring about 30 by 90 centimeters
  • Ranger Jenna Corsio descended to him and tied him to herself
  • The rescued man was transported by ATV from the Marcy Dam to the trailhead

How the events unfolded

In the United States, rescuers brought a 60-year-old tourist from Canada to safety after he spent about seven hours on an icy ledge in the Adirondack Mountains. People reports this, as also retold by Gazeta.Ru. The incident took place in October on Colden Mountain in New York State: experienced climber Eric Le Beuri was ascending the Trap Dike rock route when he dropped his crampons — devices for gripping ice — and became trapped.

The conditions he found himself in

The tourist was stuck on a ledge roughly 30 by 90 centimeters in size, covered in ice. By his own account, he could neither climb down nor sit, and did not know whether his satellite beacon had worked. Rescuers received the SOS signal at around 6:22 p.m. and reached the man at approximately 1:15 a.m.

The course of the rescue operation

Because of the dangerous terrain, rescuers had to use safety ropes. Ranger Jenna Corsio descended to the tourist, tied him to herself, and began moving back up. The team traveled through wilderness, cutting directly through dense forest toward the outpost at the Marcy Dam, from where the rescued man was taken by ATV to the trailhead. The operation ended at around 8 a.m. — meaning nearly 14 hours passed from the moment the SOS signal was received until it concluded.
